IT HAPPENED AT JANET KHAN SCHOOL OF INTEGRATED ARTS ON INDIAN SCHOOL ROAD. THEY SAY THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DUE TO THAT THEFT. WE’RE WORKING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. AS SOON AS WE HAVE NEW INFORMATION, WE’LL SHARE THAT WITH YOU. THIS INCIDENT COMES AS ANOTHER LOCATION WAS IMPACTED BY COPPER THEFT BEING STOLEN AT A SHOPPING CENTER TWICE IN FOUR MONTHS. THE OWNER OF THE TURQUOISE DESERT TAPROOM IN RIO RANCHO TELLS US HIS BUSINESS WAS HIT LAST WEEKEND. THE TAPROOM, FORCED TO CLOSE ITS DOORS SINCE PNM HAD TO TURN OFF THE POWER TO REPLACE THE COPPER. "Substantial" damage caused by theft of copper wire means the Janet Kahn School for Integrated Arts will be closed on Monday, and students may work remotely at home at their own pace, Albuquerque Public Schools spokesman Martin Salazar said.The Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts, located at 9717 Indian School Road. NE is a K-8 magnet school that focuses on "critical thinking, encouraging the arts, and embracing those who learn differently," according to the APS website, and that "integrated instruction also benefits students who are learning a new language," The school is named for educator Janet Kahn, who in 1996 was asked to create an art and music program for the elementary school students of Albuquerque Public Schools. She died of cancer in 2016 at age 68.The school's new building and campus was completed in 2023.
